The Garden Route The Garden Route is truly Nature's Garden - and Wilderness is the jewel in its crown. Stretching from about Still Bay in the west to Tsitsikamma in the east, the Garden Route encompasses the narrow coastal plain between the high Outeniqa Mountains and the warm Indian Ocean. It's a playground of indigenous forests, fynbos (Cape Macchia or Cape heath-land), crags and beaches and this has made it one of South Africa's premier tourism destinations. Happily, though, its greatest asset - its natural beauty - has been largely preserved and the area encompasses many thousands of hectares of nature reserves and national parks.
